The Rio Carnival has become one of the biggest popular festivals in the world. It is the biggest open-air show. The colors, the dance, the music, the choreography are all there and of course, you can’t miss it.

The Sambodromo hosts the annual Rio carnival parade. It was built by Oscar Niemeyer in 1984 and has become one of the symbols of Rio de Janeiro’s city.

Which sectors to buy? Which places to choose?

The Sambodromo offers different categories:

• The “Camarotes”: These are large spaces, very comfortably furnished, that can be rented for groups. Inside you have the possibility of having services like all-you-can-eat buffets, concerts, make-up artists or others. The rental is the most expensive of the categories.
• The Boxes: Closed private spaces smaller than the “camarotes”, but giving access to several people. They do not offer the same services, but they are very comfortable and of course are always well located to enjoy the best view of the parade.
• The Frisas: These are chairs placed at the bottom of the Sambodromo. You will have a great view. But the weak point is that they are in the open air, so if it rains, you will have to bring raincoats. They are still much more expensive than the stands.
• The “Arquibancadas”: In English stands. They are much cheaper! Those “reserved” for tourists are more expensive because they are numbered, but the price difference is very important compared to the other stands. Of course they are not numbered, but you will enjoy the Brazilian atmosphere and you will save money.

TIPS:

1. Don’t arrive at the time indicated on the ticket. Arrive at least one hour before to get best places.
2. In relation to the sectors, the best ones are those in the middle of the Sambodromo! For sectors 2 and 3, you will see the school being set up to arrive in the avenue, as well as for sectors 10 and 11 you will see the end of the parade.

Where to buy tickets for the Sambodromo?

Avoid buying your tickets on websites that there is no recommandation, because there are many scams. Trust professionals and tourism agencies who have been working for years and who can advise you and answer your questions.

Do not buy tickets sold by individuals on the street. These tickets can be forged.

How to get to the Sambodromo?

You can access by subway for the even sectors the closest is the Central subway and for the odd sectors the subway Praça Onze. Positive points: fast, cheap and very close to the entrances. Negative points: it’s crowded! Don’t be afraid of the crowd!

By taxi or Uber: Ask them to leave you as close as possible to the entrance to your area. But they will not have access to the Sambodromo. It will take you about ten minutes to walk. Weak points: the price for the Carnival package are high rate for the Uber because of the high demand. Highlights: the comfort of arriving quietly with your costume that is often bulky.

Other important tips:

Go in disguise because there is no cabin to change!

Don’t take a lot of stuff with you, because you won’t have anywhere to put it during the parade!

Take a pouch with just a little bit of change, your phone and your keys and hide it under your costume! Nothing can stick out during the parade. Samba schools pay special attention to the harmony of the group 😉
