The Niemeyer popular theater was built in 1997 at the request of the mayor of Niterói. But in fact it will become part of the“Niemeyer Path”, which is a set of six architectural constructions, signed by the hand of these master: The Juscelino Kubitschek Square, the Memorial Roberto Silveira, the Petrobras Center of Cinema, The Oscar Niemeyer foundation, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) and the terminal of Charitas boats. The Theater has a capacity of 460 seats in its closed space and 10 thousand people in its open space. Its facade is covered with ceramic drawn by Oscar Niemeyer, hinting at the feminine forms and the design of the theater. In the upper foyer, a big panel reveals the communist side of the architect with the reproduction of a march of the Movement of the Landless Workers (MST). Inside a wall, composed of glass, allows the entrance of light and guarantees the sight towards the Guanabara Bay. Oscar Niemeyer was born in 1907 and died on December 5th, 2012. His most famous work is the construction of the city of Brasilia, today the capital of Brazil. After Brasilia, the city of Niterói is the one which contains the most monuments from the artist. The “Niemeyer Path” quoted above is worth a mention as well. Certainly, if you are accommodated in Rio, Niterói is not very nearby beacause it is necessary to cross the Rio-Niterói bridge.
